Motivation is a force that drives individuals towards achieving their goals. There is human motivation and animal motivation the principal focus in this paper is on human motivation. There are two types of motivation; intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation exists within an individual and is not it is not caused by an external factor. It could be due to an interest or pleasure in doing something. It happens when one wants to do something.

On the other hand, extrinsic motivation involves an external factor. It does not happen within an individual. It happens when someone else wants an individual to do something. There are differences between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. First, intrinsic motivation is based on internal factors while extrinsic motivation is based on external factors. In addition, extrinsic motivation is sustainable while extrinsic motivation is unsustainable. This means that once the need is achieved, the motivation is withdrawn. Moreover, there are permanent results in intrinsic motivation, as opposed to the temporary results in extrinsic motivation.

In addition, intrinsic motivation is enhanced by a factor like control, recognition, cooperation, challenge, trust and enjoyment at work. On the contrary, extrinsic motivation is enhanced by factors such as praises, awards, money, threats, punishment and competition.

The two types of motivation some similarities (Kettner, 2002). First, they are both based on certain needs. An individual is driven to do something by certain desires. Also, the two are based on the Maslow hierarchy of needs. There are basic ones that should be satisfied before the others.

Moreover, individuals that are both intrinsically and extrinsically There are various examples of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation in an organization. Salary increments, motivational trips, awards, praises and promotions are examples of extrinsic motivation. On the other hand, love of the job, enjoyment, high achievement, responsibility, advancement, recognition and growth are examples of intrinsic motivation.
